Alleged Bondi Attackers Acted Independently and Did Not Undergo Training in the Philippines, Police Confirm.

The two alleged gunmen responsible for the fatal incident at a Hanukkah event on Bondi Beach, resulting in 15 lives, reportedly been lone actors, according to national police.

Investigators also confirmed that the 50-year-old Sajid Akram, and his 24-year-old son Naveed Akram journeyed to the Philippines on 1 November. Their itinerary included arriving in the capital Manila before traveling onward on the day of arrival to Davao City. The pair returned to Sydney on 29 November.

No Evidence of Training During Stay

Authorities indicate the pair did not undergo any type of attack-related coaching or "planning" during their time in the Philippines. Early investigations from Philippine officials suggest they "hardly ventured out of" their hotel.

The shooting—declared Australia's most severe firearm massacre since 1996—has been officially classified as a terrorist incident.

"We are currently examining the material," she said, noting that initial assessments indicate that "the alleged offenders are suspected to have operated independently."

National law enforcement Commissioner Krissy Barrett informed reporters on Tuesday that CCTV footage showing the alleged gunmen's movements in the Philippines had been provided to Australian authorities.

"There is little to no indication to indicate these suspects were affiliated with a wider organization, or were instructed by others to execute an incident," Commissioner Barrett said.

But, the men were additionally not in the Philippines for tourism, she noted. She emphasized that, since the investigation is ongoing, fresh information may come to light.

Inspiration and Court Proceedings

Previously, Australian leader Anthony Albanese remarked it looks as though both alleged attackers were "motivated by the so-called Islamic State" ideology.

During the attack, Sajid Akram was killed by police. He and his son Naveed—equipped with firearms—are accused of having opened fire on guests at the Hanukkah event.

Naveed Akram, who was injured and taken to hospital after the shooting, has been charged with 59 offences. These encompass 15 counts of murder and one count of committing a terrorist act. He is due to appear in court in April.

In the aftermath following the attack, border officials in the Philippines indicated that the father had entered the country using an foreign passport, while his younger suspect used an Australian passport.

The duo had stated the southern city of Davao as their final destination. Their scheduled journey back to Australia was for Sydney.

Davao is a large metropolis on the east of Mindanao, the Philippines' primary southern island. It is noted that, Militant militants have been known to be active in impoverished parts of southern and western Mindanao.
