Match Squads

The hosts have named an experimental lineup, most of established stars omitted. The defender, seeking to improve match sharpness, remains the single athlete to keep his place after the 3-2 defeat at Thomas Frank’s side last weekend. Backup shot-stopper Freddie Woodman and 18-year-old Northern Ireland winger Kieran Morrison make their club debuts, while the lineup also boasts teen talent Ngumoha and teenage midfielder Trey Nyoni. The reserve players is above 21 years; Gordon is the reserve with senior exposure with nine first-team outings on his record.

Crystal Palace on the other hand retain six players from the team selected for the narrow loss at Mikel Arteta’s side on Sunday. Marc Guéhi, Maxence Lacroix, Muñoz, Ismaïla Sarr, Yéremy Pino and Daichi Kamada all keep their places. He has a handful of strikes against this opponent in eight appearances for Crystal Palace and Watford, while one of the players stepping into the team tonight, Eddie Nketiah, scored the winner when the teams met at Selhurst Park last month.

Liverpool have historically found the Eagles as challenging rivals. Not invariably – they have more victories – but when the visitors overcome the Reds, they really hit, and hit hard. The 1990 FA Cup semi-final. Crystanbul. The recent curtain-raiser. The game at Selhurst last month that precipitated this dramatic downturn of the champions, their initial defeat in a string of losses.

Include another few patterns into the mix. Of the last eight meetings between the clubs, The Eagles have won three (we’re counting the season opener as a win), the Reds just two wins. Alarming for the Reds are the recent results at their home ground: Palace have secured a win and two draws of the last three. Crystal Palace have a distinct advantage over tonight’s hosts at the moment.

Having said all that, Palace are in a bit of a rut of their own. Three losses have come of their fixtures in various cups, without a victory domestically since that earlier described slump-starting Liverpool’s trip to Selhurst Park. So here are a couple of teams who would benefit from a spark to rejuvenate their campaign. That alone should give us a decent opportunity of some thrilling football tonight, though any broader implications may be influenced by what lineups the coaches decide to select; it’s not expected to be full-strength teams.
