The progressive congressional candidate, a left-leaning candidate for Congress, has been indicted on allegations related to involvement during demonstrations outside an ICE processing facility in the vicinity of the Chicago area in September.

The Federal Charges

The indictment, filed last week, allege that the 26-year old American of Palestinian descent political figure and five other individuals “obstructed and blocked” an officer who was “compelled to proceed very slowly” to prevent harm to the protesters.

The candidate, who is running for a congressional seat in Illinois, was charged with plotting to obstruct a federal officer as well as assaulting or impeding the agent while they were performing official duties.

Claims of Obstruction

According to the indictment, the group “planned together with others” to prevent by force, intimidation, and threat, Agent A, from discharging the duties of his office.

Prosecutors claim that Abughazaleh, together with the group, “struck forcefully” on the officer’s car, “gathered closely around the front and side” of the car and also “pressed on the car to block its progress”.

The charging documents state those accused etched the word “pig” on to the vehicle and damaged a side mirror and rear wiper.

Additionally, it is claimed that Abughazaleh specifically “joined the crowd at the front of the government vehicle”, and, placing her hands on the hood, leaned against the vehicle while staying directly in the car’s way, hindering and impeding the agent.

Response from the Candidate

After the charges were filed, the congressional candidate, who is known for her large social media platform, labeled the charges “political prosecution”.

“This is a … gross attempt at silencing dissent, a right protected under the first amendment. This case is yet another attempt by the Trump administration to criminalize protest and punish those who dare to speak up. That is the reason I will contest these unfair allegations,” she stated.

Abughazaleh added: “As I and others exercised our first amendment rights, ICE has hit, dragged, thrown, shot with pepper balls, and teargassed hundreds of protesters, myself included. Merely because we dared to assert that hooded individuals seizing our neighbors and frightening our community should not become routine.

“This prosecution aims at our freedoms to demonstrate, express opinions, and connect with those who oppose government actions … Throughout my career, I have resisted the nation’s regression toward authoritarianism, and I will not stop now,” she added.

Broader Context

The indictment comes as the Trump administration ramps up federal immigration raids across numerous progressive cities including Chicago – an action that has drawn strong condemnation from regional and state officials.

These operations have faced broad resistance from citizens, Democratic members of Congress, and advocacy organizations, with the ACLU describing them as a “build out of a national paramilitary policing force that could be used to … consolidate President Donald Trump’s power”.
