The EU might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the United States on five European individuals involved in fighting online hate and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’
European leaders including Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “bullying and threats”, following the travel bans targeted individuals that were central to campaigns to introduce laws governing American tech companies.
“For too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce US companies to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” stated a senior US official online. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
Broad Criticism From EU Nations
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in condemning the move.
The restrictions were enacted this week against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with several activists fighting false information, including Germany and the United Kingdom.
