Senegal's Emerging Star Camara: From Aspirations to Afcon Favourites.

When I enter the room, the young midfielder picks up a soccer ball he won’t let go of throughout the conversation. This serves as a simple symbol for a ambition he has never let slip. “I only wanted the beautiful game; my mind was set on nothing else,” states this AS Monaco and Senegal playmaker.

His determination and raw talent convinced teams such as Metz, Monaco, and Génération Foot. However, the most difficult person to convince didn't come from a club executive or manager, it was from his dad. “He was against me playing soccer simply because he hadn’t seen me play,” explains Camara.

Surmounting Early Hurdles

Eventually, on “a special day,” Camara earned his dad's approval to chase his career in the sport. A further barrier was his modest frame, which discouraged his hometown team Casa Sports from offering him a deal.

However, Génération Foot – the institution that produced stars like Sadio Mané, Papiss Cissé and Ismaïla Sarr – were convinced immediately. After he earned the best player in a regional tournament, the scouts were “shocked” to discover he was without a contract. They acted quickly. “I was taken directly to the training centre. They didn’t want me from going back home,” Camara said.

An Unforgettable Season and Continental Breakthrough

This move set him on a pathway to Europe. A defining period came in 2023, “a year to remember,” which began with Camara winning the CHAN trophy. Just weeks later, despite fatigue, he played in the U-20 Africa Cup, leading his country to victory and earning best player.

Soon after, he was unveiled as FC Metz, following in the footsteps of Mané. “Adapting was never a challenge,” states the youngster. He resides by himself in Europe, a choice his relatives support to maintain his concentration.

Inspiration and Playing Style

Distractions are not really a concern for Camara, who draws inspiration from the Belgian maestro's “modesty” and exceptional playing qualities. Additionally, he's a huge fan of midfielders such as Fede Valverde, Toni Kroos, and his international teammate Idrissa Gana Gueye.

His powerful shot and precision from set pieces are notable assets. Camara confesses a need to temper his aggression, having been shown red at the start of his spells at both Metz and Monaco. “It is a habit I carry with me!” he jokes.

Life at Monaco, Teammates and Future Goals

With his current club, he cherishes learning from veterans such as Denis Zakaria and particularly Paul Pogba. “When I heard about the interest in Pogba, I thought we are really lucky,” he said.

Right now, attention is firmly on the Afcon tournament with Senegal. “We are the team to beat – we can’t hide from that. After defeating England in their own country…,” he states, referencing a memorable 3-1 win in Nottingham.

Regarding a future move to the Premier League, he is committed to Monaco at present. “I feel really comfortable here,” he affirms. However, he's often teased by icon El-Hadji Diouf about his two Africa Young Player of the Year awards. He laughs, but is serious about winning the senior top prize in the future.

“The pressure is on us – that's the reality. If you beat England in their own country… it gives you belief.”

Looking ahead, Lamine Camara blends humble beginnings, unwavering focus, and grand ambitions as he aims to lead Senegal to continental glory and forge his own lasting legacy in the world of football.
