Shoaib Bashir Makes Surprise Inclusion in English Ashes Team
England have opted for a twelve-player squad just two days ahead of the opening Test match, with the 22-year-old spinner earning a surprise place.
Bashir's selection indicates that the tourists will delay until the day of the initial match to decide whether the venue pitch suit four seamers or the addition of a spin bowler.
Both pace bowlers are included in the selected squad, showing there are no doubts about either fast bowler's fitness.
Gus Atkinson and Brydon Carse complete the bowling group, with the latter most likely to be omitted if the spinner enters the final team.
Pitch Factors Lean Toward Seamers
Brendon McCullum had been expected to opt for an all-seam attack on a ground that has hosted several past matches.
During these matches, the majority of dismissals have been taken by pace bowling, with only a small number to spin bowling.
Among these 40 wickets, Australia’s Nathan Lyon has taken the bulk, while all visiting spinners together have just a handful.
At a venue known for its pace and bounce, and whose curator, the pitch preparer, pledged that these traits are “permanent and not going to change,” a side relying on fast bowlers remains the probable decision.
Spin Options Weighed
There had been rumors that Will Jacks could be brought into the team to provide some slow bowling while additionally bolstering the batting lineup.
But McCullum has opted to keep faith with Bashir, having said previously that he would be his first-choice slow bowler for the series.
In July, Lyon described the English spinner as “OK,” saying that “from my perspective, Jack Leach is still England’s top slow bowler.”
“It is a massive role, and it can be a significant test for people who lack experience in the past in Australian pitches,” he remarked of slow bowling in matches Down Under.
“I’m not going to let my secrets out so opponents perform and excel out here.”
