Citizens have assembled throughout the country to commemorate two years since the Hamas-led offensive on 7 October 2023, as negotiations continued in Egypt over an end to the war in the Gaza Strip.

The assault led to over 1,200 people killed and 251 others abducted away to Gaza as prisoners. It was the most most lethal day for Jews since the Holocaust.

Israel answered by launching a military offensive in Gaza which has killed over 67,000 people, based on figures from the area's Hamas-run health ministry. Its numbers are seen as reliable by the United Nations and other international bodies.

"The bloodthirsty adversaries have struck forcefully, but they have not overcome us," the leader stated on that day.

He also vowed to "realize all the aims of the war: the return of all the captured, the removal of the Hamas administration and the assurance that Gaza will no longer pose a risk to Israel".

Commemorative Ceremonies Across Israel

The government authorities rescheduled official commemorations until October 16th - after the completion of the festive season - but gatherings still were held around the country on Tuesday.

A remembrance service for the relatives of people who lost their lives in the Hamas attack was held in the coastal city. Put together by the affected families, it was televised on Israeli television channels.

Some time earlier, a silent tribute was held across the country.

Negotiation Meetings in Egypt

At the same time, the conflicting parties' negotiating teams convened in the Egyptian tourist destination of Sharm el-Sheikh for a second day of third-party negotiations to review the provisions of the plan.

A high-ranking delegate knowledgeable about the discussions indicated that an late session of indirect talks started at 19:00 Cairo time.

The official stated the day's discussions finished without tangible results, because of differences over the suggested Israeli withdrawal maps from Gaza and over safeguards Hamas wants to ensure Israel does not restart combat after the first phase of the deal.

He added that the talks are "tough and have yet to deliver any significant progress," but mentioned that intermediaries are working hard to narrow the gaps between the both parties.

Key Points in Negotiations

  • An enduring ceasefire
  • The exchange of the captives still kept by Hamas for Palestinian prisoners from Gaza
  • The withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza
  • Plans for assistance provision
  • Post-war governance of the territory

Public Reaction

In Tel Aviv's memorial area previously, 29-year-old Hagar - whose brother endured the assault on the gathering, where many attendees were murdered and many more were abducted by Hamas militants - told: "No place appears as home any longer and until every captive come back not a single person will have peace of mind."

"Once we see all home again, we can feel relief again. Then we can begin to heal," she continued.

Near Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's official dwelling in Jerusalem, people congregated to demonstrate their backing for the relatives of the abducted. Israel reports 48 remain in detention in Gaza, approximately twenty of whom are believed to be living.

Protester Atalia Regev explained: "We need do every compromise required for the abducted to come back home. But we really want promises that we will be secure."

Research now regularly indicate that approximately 70% of the population prefer the conflict to conclude in return for the release of the abducted.

Palestinian Situation

At the location of Nova festival, those paying respects gathered to remember the victims.

From the site, the boom of military attacks and artillery could be detected just a few kilometres away in Gaza, where observers indicated the severe Israeli bombardment carried on.

In the urban center, bombardments were documented in the dawn of that day in the western neighborhood, area and Nasr districts and in the east side neighbourhood of the community, as well Shati refugee camp to the northwestern area.

"As the evening falls, the anxiety appears with it," evacuated Gaza City resident a local woman, whose 17-year-old son was lost his life by an Israeli air strike last year, explained.

"We are terrified of the bombings. During nighttime we are resting together, holding each other, particularly my smallest child who rests his face on me the entire evening."

"Constantly we check the reports to see what happened. And I'm worried that this truce will not be finalized and that the fighting will return to us."

Humanitarian Situation

The healthcare center in the urban area said it had taken in the remains of six people by the daytime, including several killed in an Israeli strike in the southern area.

Another medical facility in the south region of the city reported another two fatalities had been brought there. A person was died by Israeli soldiers while seeking assistance to the south region, medical staff said.
