Torrential Precipitation Worsen Circumstances for Uprooted Gazans, Officials Warn
Intense precipitation over the past week have intensified the extremely difficult circumstances of the vast number of displaced residents in the territory, as reported by relief agencies.
"Awful" Weather Brings Grave Threats
A representative detailed the weather overnight as "terrible", with rain so intense that around 15cm (6in) of water accumulated on the ground.
"The recent weather was exceptionally terrible for the residents. The heavy rains were so strong... And the gusts were so strong," stated the official.
Officials express significant worry that children living in temporary structures in damp garments will succumb to hypothermia and additional illnesses.
Casualties and Extensive Destruction
Health authorities have reported that one baby has succumbed from exposure and a minimum of 11 other people have lost their lives in roof cave-ins caused by the severe weather.
Further statements suggest a higher fatality count. Spokespeople said that multiple structures had totally fallen and many others had been partly destroyed.
- Roughly 55,000 families impacted by flooding.
- More than 40 official safe spaces severely flooded.
- Countless residents required to relocate again.
Relief Distribution Deemed Insufficient
Agencies have stepped up shipments of shelter, bedding and garments following the truce commenced, but they have said there is still not enough aid entering.
"Agencies are striving constantly to provide that aid and to hand it out, but the scale of the needs is so enormous that we still have thousands of people and children who are really enduring hardship nightly," warned one representative.
Long-Term Issues and Ceasefire Plans
The second phase of the agreement includes arrangements for the reconstruction of Gaza, along with future administration, the pullback of personnel, and other terms.
Aid bodies have stressed the need for "expanded and ongoing humanitarian assistance to respond to pressing and future needs."
The war was sparked by an assault in October 2023. Later actions have caused a substantial number of lives lost in the region, as per health ministry reports.
